How to disable Blogger's lightbox effect?

Just last month, Blogger announced a lightbox (slideshow) effect for images without consulting bloggers, eventually causing an uproar. The uproar prompted Blogger to remove this feature almost immediately.

Now, this lightbox feature is back and enabled by default. However, it is now possible to disable it from Settings.
