New Poly Students to Take MA1301

haha.. Just realized new students from poly enrolling into SoC will require to sit for and pass MA1301 exam to be considered to have met 'A' Level Mathematics pre-requisite. All Maths modules in SoC require 'A' Level Maths. However, poly students before this new batch are not told to take MA1301 and so end up everyone being waive this pre-requisite. Because of that, every single poly student must have went through the process of appealing for pre-requisite waive for every single maths module. How stupid they all. Why can't they run a script to waive for all poly students? Ok, no more confusion. All new poly students will need that bridging module. I still feel that module will not bring much help to poly students. How is it possible to learn the 2 years of JC Maths study from just 1 module?

Email destroys the mind faster than marijuana - study

Modern technology depletes human cognitive abilities more rapidly than drugs, according to a psychiatric study conducted at King's College, London. And the curse of 'messaging' is to blame.

Email users suffered a 10 per cent drop in IQ scores, more than twice the fall recorded by marijuana users, in a clinical trial of over a thousand participants. Doziness, lethargy and an inability to focus are classic characteristics of a spliffhead, but email users exhibited these particular symptoms to a "startling" degree, according to Dr Glenn Wilson.

The deterioration in mental capacity was the direct result of the trialists' addiction to technology, researchers discovered.

Email addicts were bombarded by context switches and developed an inability to distinguish between trivial and significant messages. Incredibly, 20 per cent of trialists jeopardized their immediate social relations by rushing off to "check their messages" in the middle of a conversation.

Wilson's research is no flash in the pan. Computer technology in its modern, "interconnected" form is dumbing down the population more rapidly than television.

A study of 100,000 school children in over 30 countries around the world testified that non-computer using kids performed better in literacy and numeracy schools than PC-using children. Education experts have dubbed it the "problem solving deficit disorder".

Awash with facts, we've forgotten how to think.

King's College's pioneering study focussed solely on messaging - but there are many other emerging technologies that could be dumbing down technologies too, and their consequences haven't been fully explored.

I had a sushi buffet with Regine today at NUS's Genki Sushi. We finished a total of 34 plates between us. In the process, we took some photos and some movie clips. I must admit the process was enjoying not because of the food definitely. My form was not in top state because I usually can eat a lot before I feel any discomfort but today... sigh.. Both of us ate till we soon became sick of the sushi. Greedy us, we ordered 4 more plates of sushi/sashimi even though we were really full. 4 plates would mean 8 pieces of sushi/sashimi! We took quite some time to force ourselves on the remaining plates.

I am still feeling sushi in me.

No time.
This is what I remember.
Few years ago, Allaire was bought over by Macromedia. Products like ColdFusion, Homesite, etc. were from Allaire and many were worried that ColdFusion would be history after the bought over. However, Macromedia decided to keep ColdFusion and soon came the MX version for CFML as well. Now Adobe is going to buy Macromedia which makes Adobe even bigger. Guess Sun and Microsoft are going to face a likely challenger.

Now I am wondering whether is it wise to buy a Macromedia Flash MX 2004 reference book now.

Sumatra is going to suffer another natural disaster :( This time, supposedly dormant volcano is now activated by previous seismic activities. God bless them.

Monday, April 11, 2005

Earthquake in Sumatra again! Very soon the place will be uninhabitated.
I watched the NKF charity show just now. There are some performers like Liang Zhiqiang who claimed that he had never tried his stunt on metal fans and that night was his first. There are so many first time that made me wonder are they really telling the truth? I don't think it is possible to perform without practice especially in front of national tv. C'mon guys, tell the truth! I ain't 3 years old kid to fool.

I am sick :'(
Down with running nose and cough with phlegm.
I think I am someone who cannot stop working. CS3214 project is just over and I have been resting for few days. Resting has made me sick :'( I guess I am those workaholic type.

Friday, April 08, 2005

I celebrated the end of CS3214 project with my project mates today. We met up at 3pm outside NUS's Genki Sushi for a sushi buffet. The buffet will last us till 6pm. Francis and I reached Genki Sushi at 2:55pm and were the earliest two. We couldn't resist the temptation any longer and so went ahead with the buffet first. 15 minutes later, Zhiwei arrived but Francis and I had already finished 15 plates! Then came Chunyin and then Peiru. We managed to clear 69 plates in the end!

Condi: Sir, I have the report here about the new leader of
China.
Bush: Great. Lay it on me.
Condi: Hu is the new leader of China.
Bush: That's what I want to know.
Condi: That's what I'm telling you.
Bush: That's what I'm asking you. Who is the new leader of
China?
Condi: Yes.
Bush: I mean the fellow's name.
Condi: Hu.
Bush: The guy in China.
Condi: Hu.
Bush: The new leader of China.
Condi: Hu.
Bush: The Chinaman!
Condi: Hu is leading China.
Bush: Now whaddya' asking me for?
Condi: I'm telling you Hu is leading China.
Bush: Well, I'm asking you. Who is leading China?
Condi: That's the man's name.
Bush: That's who's name?
Condi: Yes.
Bush: Will you or will you not tell me the name of the new
leader of China?
Condi: Yes, sir.
Bush: Yassir? Yassir Arafat is in China? I thought he was
in the Middle East.
Condi: That's correct.
Bush: Then who is in China?
Condi: Yes, sir.
Bush: Yassir is in China?
Condi: No, sir.
Bush: Then who is?
Condi: Yes, sir.
Bush: Yassir?
Condi: No, sir.
Bush: Look, Condi. I need to know the name of the new
leader of China. Get me the Secretary General of the U.N.
on the phone.
Condi: Kofi?
Bush: No, thanks.
Condi: You want Kofi?
Bush: No.
Condi: You don't want Kofi.
Bush: No. But now that you mention it, I could use a glass
of milk. And then get me the U.N.
Condi: Yes, sir.
Bush: Not Yassir! The guy at the U.N.
Condi: Kofi?
Bush: Milk! Will you please make the call?
Condi: And call who?
Bush: Who is the guy at the U.N?
Condi: Hu is the guy in China.
Bush: Will you stay out of China?!
Condi: Yes, sir.
Bush: And stay out of the Middle East! Just get me the guy
at the U.N.
Condi: Kofi.
Bush: All right! With cream and two sugars. Now get on the
phone.
(Condi picks up the phone.)
Condi: Rice, here.
Bush: Rice? Good idea. And a couple of egg rolls, too.
Maybe we should send some to the guy in China. And the
Middle East. Can you get Chinese food in the Middle East?
Finally, CS3214 project is over. Deadline for CS3214 is 11am today and our presentation is at 4pm. The entire group has not slept for more than 24 hours just to try to improve on the final bit of coding. Francis presented the admin portal while I presented the business portal. I am quite happy that our evaluator, Dr Poo, was quite impressed with the product. Just hope the documentation part will not pull down the overall marks. I admit the documentation part is a bit not up to standard partly because the entire group is from polytechnic and none of us took CS2103 before! Anyway, it's over.
